Jazz Improv Concert Monday, April 23

April 6, 2007

Pima Community College's Jazz Improv Combos will perform in concert, Monday, April 23 at 7:30 p.m. in the Center for the Arts Proscenium Theatre.

The PCC performing arts department maintains two jazz combos, both under the direction of Mike Kuhn.  Each combo contains drums, bass, piano, guitar, several horns and vocalists. Each group performs their own set from a repertoire featuring music from early swing numbers through be-bop, modern fusion and funk styles. Some of the concert pieces scheduled are: “Tune-Up” by Miles Davis, “Sidewinder” by Lee Morgan, “Locomotion” by John Coltrane, “Boston Bernie” by Dexter Gordon, plus standards like “Honeysuckle Rose,” “Indiana,” and “Rose Room.”

The PCC Jazz Combos are formed out of the weekly improvisation class. Besides this performance, several combos perform at a variety of additional venues. Each combo also has the opportunity to cut a demonstration CD recording of several music compositions at a professional recording studio.

In addition to instructing jazz ensemble and improvisation classes at PCC, Mike Kuhn plays the saxophone with the Arizona Jazz Orchestra and performs in a variety of venues around the greater Tucson area.

Tickets for the Jazz Improv Combo concert are $5-$6 and are available through the Center for the Arts box office at 206-6986.

The Center for the Arts is located on West Campus at 2202 West Anklam Road.  For more information, call 520-206-6986 or e-mail centerforthearts@pima.edu.
