Search the Web

Just as there are millions of web sites, there are thousands of ways to search the web. Use the resources below to find the best method for you. For many searches, a popular search engine will do; but if not, we've included other search methods as well.

Finding a web site is only the first step. Anyone can put up a web page; before you use what you find, evaluate the information and make sure it's reliable.

Popular Search Engines

Three of the most popular general search engines are:

Google: An uncannily accurate search engine
Google
Yahoo: A well-known web directory
Yahoo   [ options]
Dogpile: A meta-search engine that sends your search to multiple other search engines
Dogpile. All results, no mess.

More Search Engines

Search engines "crawl" the web to locate as many web sites as possible. They tend to be large; Google, for instance, contains more than two billion web pages.

More Web Directories

Web directories are man-made lists of links, placed into carefully chosen categories. Typically directories are smaller and better organized than search engines.

More Meta-Engines

Meta-engines allow you to use multiple search engines at the same time.

Search the Invisible Web

Many web databases cannot be crawled by search engines. The "invisible web" contains information that must be specially located and searched.

  • CompletePlanet: Contains over 103,000 databases and specialty search engines
  • Infomine: Scholarly Internet Resource Collections
