College Updates
PCC to Explore Expansion into Center of Downtown
Pima Community College will explore expansion into the center of downtown Tucson in order to enhance workforce training and enhance advising and other services for current and prospective students.
At its regular meeting Wednesday night, the PCC Governing Board voted for the College to identify areas in the center of downtown that would be appropriate for a new presence.
The College’s customized workforce education programs at Community Campus are at maximum capacity. Also, Tucson Mayor Jonathan Rothschild’s Education Task Force as well as the Workforce Investment Board have requested that the College offer more workforce education opportunities.
In addition, the Board:
- Received a report from the College on registration and placement pathways and the PCC Prep Academy. New registration and placement standards have been in place since March 2012. The Prep Academy offers a student-centered approach to developmental instruction in Mathematics, Reading and Writing.
- Approved resident tuition rates for eligible students in the Department of Homeland Security’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. Beginning in Fall 2013, students are eligible for PCC’s resident tuition rates if they present Form I-766, Employment Authorization Document, from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, and provide documentation that they have established a permanent residency in Arizona for at least one year.
- Approved a one-year contract with Arizonashuttle.com to provide shuttle transport service at no charge to PCC students. The shuttle will run twice a day during the Fall 2013 and Spring 2014 semesters and will connect Downtown Campus, West Campus, Desert Vista Campus and The University of Arizona.
- Approved partnering with Amphitheater Public Schools to “adopt” elementary schools in the district. PCC will make a multiyear commitment to provide tutoring, career counseling and mentoring to students, as well as campus tours, occupational program assistance and other services.
Service and Memorial for Former PCC Employee Janine Mazanec
There will be a service for Janine Mazanec tonight from 5-7 p.m. at the Desert Sunset Funeral Home, 3081 W. Orange Grove Road. Janine is the wife of Milo Mazanec, who is an IT Technician at Northwest Campus and a Campus Security Officer. A candlelight memorial service will be held following the service at 7:30 p.m. at Northwest Campus, Community Room (S207). It is fitting to host a memorial at Northwest as Milo and Janine met while working there and were married on campus.
PCC Speakers’ Series Featuring Dr. Dianna Repp, March 5
Enjoy a thought-provoking presentation by Dr. Dianna Repp, Anthropology Faculty, at PCC’s Speakers’ Series on March 5. Repp will examine themes of death and dying across cultures, as well as end-of-life practices unique to specific cultures.
Repp has explored anthropology of religion, art and end-of-life issues for more than two decades. She has taught Anthropology at Pima since 1996 and holds a Ph.D. in Anthropology from Arizona State University. She is involved in local and national funerary societies, and last fall attended the First International Summit of Funeral Cooperatives in Québec City, Canada.
The lecture begins at 6 p.m. at the PCC District Office Community Board Room, 4905 E. Broadway Blvd.
12 PCC Students Earn Arizona Phi Theta Kappa Honors
Twelve Pima Community College students have been named to the 2012 All-Arizona Academic teams for Phi Theta Kappa Society. The students join community college students from around the state who are selected each year based upon academic achievement, leadership and service to the community.
East Campus Hosts “Meet a Professional” Series
East Campus is hosting a “Meet a Professional” series, providing students with the opportunity to meet professionals working in Veterinary Science, Pharmacy Technology and Administration of Justice.
The sessions are noon-1:30 p.m. in the Community Room.
The schedule is:
- Feb. 28: Veterinary Science Careers
- March 28: Pharmacy Technology Careers
- April 24: Administration of Justice Careers
Each session will have a panel of 4-6 working professionals who will share valuable information and tips about what one can expect on the job and how a Pima education can be applied in the world of work. A representative from the major programs will share program requirements and courses. At the end, there will be an opportunity for Q & A and networking.
Volunteer to Serve on a Standing Committee, March 22 Deadline
All PCC employees – staff, faculty and administrators – interested in serving on a standing committee for the 2013-2014 academic year need to complete the Standing Committee Interest Form to be considered. The deadline is March 22. Volunteers will be notified by email by May 10 regarding new committee assignments.
Please note that this process is the recognized vehicle for employees to indicate their interest and willingness to serve on a standing committee next year. Individuals serving on a standing committee whose terms do not expire until spring 2014 do not need to reapply.
