Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO)

In the early 60's, the EEOC (Equal Employment Opportunity Commission) was established by President Kennedy to "level the playing field." Today, the EEOC enforces the following laws:

Equal Pay Act of 1963: prohibits wage differentials based on gender
Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964: prohibits employment discrimination because of race, color, sex, national origin, and religion.
Age Discrimination in Employment act of 1967: prohibits discrimination against persons age 40 or older
Rehabilitation Act of 1973: requires federal contractors to use affirmative action in recruiting and employing people with disabilities.

What is the Law?

Equal Employment Opportunity stems from the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
Title VII of the Civil Rights Act prohibits discrimination against students on the basis of race, national origin, sex, and religion in vocational education programs.

What this Office Does

Reviews all employment related processes to ensure compliance with equal employment opportunity.
The EEO/AA office is responsible for the administration of the College EEO/AA discrimination complaint process which covers both employees and student discrimination complaints based on Title VII and VI.

What this Office Does Not Do

This office is not responsible or have authority in areas related to general employee relations issues: the employee handbook grievance process, or the student code of conduct processes.
