PCC Honors Larry Toledo By Flying Flag at Half-Staff

August 15, 2012

Tucson, AZ – The flag at Pima Community College's West Campus will be flown at half-staff on Thursday in honor of Larry Toledo, the first Executive Director of Athletics. He died on Saturday in a one-car rollover near Three Points.

Toledo was Executive Director of Athletics at Pima for 24 years, from 1973 to 1997, and dedicated 27 years of total service to Pima.

"Larry treated everybody like family. He promoted education through sports and always tried to make sure people had opportunities, especially for those who didn't have college as an option," Ben Carbajal, an athletic trainer at Pima, said. "He was a father figure for everyone related to the program."

Edgar Soto, the current Executive Director of Athletics, hopes to keep Toledo's legacy alive.

"Larry did a lot for Pima athletics and I respect all the things he did," Soto said. "He gave us a starting point and we will continue to move in the right direction."

Arizona Daily Star sports columnist Greg Hansen wrote about his experiences with Toledo in Tuesday's edition.

Visitation will be at Carrillo’s Tucson Mortuary today from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. A rosary will be held at 7 p.m. On Thursday, a funeral service will be at Santa Cruz Catholic Church at 10 a.m. with burial at Holy Hope Cemetery immediately following.
