Employees

The City of Tucson Police Department awarded its Medal of Merit to Stella Bay, Chief of PCC’s Department of Public Safety.  Chief Bay is a former TPD officer.

West Campus Technology Faculty Lazaro Hong received the “Intel Educator of the Year” award at the Semiconductor, Automated Manufacturing, Electronics- Training and Education Conference (SAME-TEC) conference in Irving Texas.

The National Council for Marketing and Public Relations (NCMPR) awarded Graphics Designer Bryce Morthland a gold medallion award in the categories of Brochure/Flyer, series; Computer-Generated Illustration; and Academic Catalog

Chicanos Por La Causa presented its Community Advocacy Award to East Campus Acting Dean of Student Services Juan Soto in recognition of his longstanding service to the College and the community.

The National Association of College and University Mail Services (NACUMS) presented Mailroom Specialist Neil Williams with its Outstanding Team Member Award.

Congratulations to the College’s Outstanding Employees of the Year for 2007.  The employees were nominated by their peers and recognized at All College Day, August 17.   Criteria included a commitment to professional development, enhancing the College work and learning environment and providing exceptional service and contribution to the College.

Named as Outstanding Staff Employees were Ana Angulo, Student Services Specialist at West Campus Assessment Center; Philip Franz, Sergeant, PCC Department of Public Safety; and Foster Smith, Maintenance Trades Specialist (Electrician) at the Desert Vista Campus. 

Diane Lussier, Mathematics Faculty at the Downtown Campus, and Randal Munsen, History Faculty at the Northwest Campus, were named as the College's Outstanding Faculty of the Year.

Neil Williams, Mail Services Technician, received the Outstanding Team Member award at the 2007 conference of the National Association of Colleges and Universities Mail Services.

Virginia Chomiak was elected to serve as the Vice President of the Arizona Career Development Association (ACDA) – Southern Region.

Dolores Duran-Cerda was awarded the A. Dolores Brown Award by the Arizona Language Association (AZLA).

Three employees received awards from the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations (NCMPR).  Louise Glogoff received a Gold medallion; Leah Einecker and Boris Salazar received Bronze medallions.

Gail Gonzales was honored by Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers for 2007.

Carly Wilson was selected as a cluster facilitator for the University of Arizona’s LeaderShape Institute.

Students

Five PCC students were invited to create and assist the 6th Annual State of Education luncheon. Chris Carroll, Greg Johnson, Evi Loveres, Lisa Roland and Sean Thurlow created displays  to showcase work as a Trade Show Exhibit.  The presentation incorporated animation, film, photography, modeling and print projects.   PCC's Digital Arts program was the only one in the state selected as an example of an exemplary education program partnering with business.

Eric Gonzalez and Yaron Yarden were recognized as major contributors to the College’s literary publication, Sandscript Art and Literary Magazine, the 2007 edition.  This edition won the national award given by the Community College Humanities Association, competing against 130 other community colleges.

The Women's Soccer Team finished third in the nation this season.  The team included Katelyn Cunningham, Nichole Elias, Jaclyn Frazier, Denise Gordon, Amanda Guibor, Kaylen Jackson, Jenny Kendall, Alex King, Andrea Lopez, Kimberly Makar, Jessica McDorman, Ebriana Moore, Kelcee Newell, Adrianna Phininzy, Kianna Sharp, Keosha Smith, Sarah Villa and Viviana Zumpano.  The team's coach is Kendra Veliz.

Men's Soccer placed as runner up in the Regional Championship.  The team includes Jose Ahumada, Ricardo Aranda, Robert Bonilla, Ricardo Bustamante, Sergio Carrillo, Kevin Cusack, Fernando Gauna, Geoffrey Hermanson, Luis Hernandez, John Paul Hernandez, Ricardo Jimenez, Devin Lange, Jason Leucht, Courtney Lewis-Castle, Philip Maben, Reymundo Miranda, Carlos Moll, Moses Montoya, Arber Mustafa, Jesus Ortiz, Ruben Palacios, Alejandro Rangel-Flores, Peter Romero, Travis Sanchez, Marien Van Der Lelif, David Villa and Leopoldo Villasenor .  The Men's Soccer coach is David Cosgrove.

The Women's Cross Country Team finished the season 6th in the nation.  The team includes Denise Barajas, Emily Edgar, Rebecca Greenwald, Haley Henson-Heaps, Amanda Leyvas, Tashanna Masayesva, Cherise Price, Maricruz Reynoso, Aurora Trujillo and Erika Valenzuela .

The Men's Cross Country Team finished 14th in the country.  The team includes Sean A. Arps, Damion Crawford, Ernest Cruz, Jr., Joseph Cuffari, Craig Curley, Kyle Hough, Brady Leggett , Peter Madrigal, Michael Rascon and Alex Westerholm Greg Wenneborg is the coach of both the Men's and Women's Cross Country teams.

Kennedi Stogsdill was named to the All USA Academic Team by USA Today, one of only 20 community college students nationwide to make the First Team.  Ms. Stogsdill was one of twelve PCC students named to the 2007 All Arizona Academic Team. 

More than 330 Pima Community College students participated in the annual Student Mathematics League competition for the Southwest Region of the American Mathematics Association of the Two-Year College (AMATYC).   The top five PCC scorers in Round 1 were Johnathan Raymond, Abram Baliles, Aaron Best, Christopher King and Ryan Felix.  In Round 2, the top five scorers were Chris Wilson, Frank Fimbres, Ryan Felix, Jesus Garcia and Danielle Johnson.  Danielle Johnson finished 12th in overall scoring and was recognized as the female with the highest cumulative score in the region. Ryan Felix finished 9th overall.  Pima Community College took second place overall. The Southwest Region includes 19 colleges in Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and Oklahoma.

Victor Castañeda and Karla Scott have been named Coca-Cola Two-Year Colleges Scholars.  Castañeda and Scott, who are also brother and sister, each received $1,000 from the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation to use toward continuing their education at PCC.  The siblings applied separately and were nominated individually.  Castañeda and Scott were among 350 students nationwide who received the scholarship based on their academic success and commitment to community service.

The following students were inducted into the National Adult Education Honor Society:  Lourdes Barcelo, Iris Yaneth Borboa, Margarita Canela, Shelly Emerson, Jewel Flemons, Christie Gin, Lorena Gomez, Susana Jiménez, Donna McLaughlin, Abraham Mendoza, Jawahir Roble, Lidia Sanchez, Mayra Sanchez, Lilian Valdéz, Olivia Verdugo, Xuanren Wang, Beatriz Zamora, Marielena Zamudio, and Tracy Zumwalt.

Twelve PCC students were named to the 2007 All-Arizona Academic Team.  The students named to the first team included:  Kristina Curry, Sarah Daw, Dorothy Nishwitz, Kristina Skrinjaric, Kennadi Stogsdill and Alma Verdugo.  Named to the second team were Avery Davis, Cyrus Soroosh and Tambrea Ryman. The third team included Michal Capo, Tanysha Owens and Veronica Reyna.

Heather Cossette, Alex Jiménez, Max Jiménez, Jessica Maric, Jeremy Sautter and Amanda Servin competed individually in the 2006 Southern Arizona Language Fair and won first places in Spanish Drama, College-Level, First Semester.

A number of students in the Digital Arts program received ADDY awards from the Tucson Advertising Federation.  Gold ADDY awards were presented to Joey BrownJohn Weatherford, Eric Gonzales, Matthew Marslan, Gurreros Salcedo, Gina Tom, and Yaron Yarden.  Silver ADDY awards were presented to John Weatherford, Chris Carroll, Linda Hough, Rebecca Olson, and Lisa Roland.  Bronze ADDY awards were presented to Evi Loveres and Savannah Tom.

Greg Johnson and Anna Luna were each awarded a $1,000 scholarship from the Tucson Advertising Federation.

Pima students who earned top scores on the 2006-2007 national American Mathematics Association of the Two-Year College (AMATYC) Student Math League exam included:  Abram Baliles, Aaron Best, Jeffry Bisschop, Hyun Bae Cho, Chad Essig, Ryan Felix, Frank Fimbres, Maxwell Flanigan, Jesus Garcia, Stephanie Grijalva, Danielle Johnson, Christopher King, Sergey Pitman, William Rappeport, Johnathan Raymond, Michelle Robbins, Christopher Wilson, Michael Wraight and Yiming Zhang.

Community members

The Board of Governors thanks Cyndi Dienes, for her efforts to create an arts partnership with the West Campus and to establish an onsite PCC course for staff of the Community Partnership of Southern Arizona.

The Board of Governors extends their appreciation to Mayor Bob Walkup, City of Tucson; Chairman Richard Elias, Pima County Board of Supervisors; and Congressman Raul Grijalva, District 7, for attending and addressing the college’s assembled faculty and staff at All College Day, August 17.   Their positive comments and support of education set the tone for the upcoming academic year.

Congratulations to Dr. Patricia Navarette Mars as the Pima Community College nominee for the American Association of Community College Outstanding Alumni Award.  Dr. Mars began her academic career at Pima Community College, then transferred to the University of Arizona where she completed her undergraduate and medical studies.  Dr. Mars specializes in cosmetic surgery and recently opened her own private practice and surgery center, Venus by Mars.  She also does pro bono work through the St. Elizabeth of Hungary Clinic, including reconstructive surgery for patients without insurance.

Jim Murphy and Roger Forrester from the Pima Council on Aging were recognized for partnering with Pima Community College on the Active Adult Expo, held at the Downtown Campus on January 13, 2007.

Brian Johnson was recognized for his service as the Chairperson of the College's Advisory Board for the Hotel and Restaurant Management program.
