Next up, Nationals for members of men's & women's track teams

Nearly two dozen members of Pima’s men’s and women’s track teams have qualified for the 2009 NJCAA Outdoor Nationals.

Twelve members of the women’s team, under Arizona Community College Athletic Conference track Coach of the Year Greg Wenneborg, qualified at this week’s 2009 Region I Championship in Mesa. Aurora Trujillo led the way. She won the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a meet record 11 minutes and 29 seconds. She will compete at nationals in that event, plus the 1,500- and 3,000-meter runs. The 4x800-meter relay team of Brittany Delker, Danielle Higgins, Cherise Price and Leandra Treusch won that event in 9:20.93, the second fastest time in NJCAA competition this year and a PCC record.

Also winning at the meet for the Aztec women was Monica Honyumptewa (10,000-meter run; 44 minutes, 59.47 seconds).

Nine members of the men’s team qualified for Nationals through the Region I meet. Jeremiah Korn won the hammer throw with a distance of 151 feet, 7 inches and qualified for Nationals, where he also will compete in shot put.

Both the women’s and men’s teams finished third in the Region I meet, behind Central Arizona College and Mesa Community College.

The Aztecs will compete in the 2009 NJCAA National Championship is May 21-23 in Hutchinson, Kan.
