PCC student wins national track title
Pima’s Aurora Trujillo, (SO, Tucson, Cholla HS) is the 2009 NJCAA National Champion in the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase.
She won the event with a time of 9 minutes, 16.8 second on May 21 at the NJCAA National Championship in Hutchison, Kan. Trujillo also was named a First Team All-American. Aztec teammate Vivian Reed, (SO, Tucson, Cienega HS) was fourth in the event, with a time of 11:56.9, a personal record and second all-time at Pima, behind Trujillo’s school record.
Trujillo also was sixth in the women’s 5,000-meter run, with a personal best time of 18:25.5.
The women’s team finished 10th overall in the May 21-23 competition. The men’s team was 24th.
Other top performers for Pima were the women’s 4 x 800-meter relay team of Brittany Delker, (SO, Tucson, Desert View HS), Danielle Higgins, (SO, Benson HS), Cherise Price, (SO, Tucson, Catalina High Magnet School) and Leandra Treusch, (FR, Tucson, Catalina Foothills HS). The team finished third with a time of 9:16.8, earning it an All-American honorable mention award. In addition, Delker was fourth in the women’s 400-meter hurdles (1:04.06).
Aztec Stephen Bullard, (FR, Tucson, Santa Rita HS) finished fourth in the men’s 800-meter run, with a Pima record and personal best time of 1:51.16.
Pima’s reigning national champion Jeremiah Korn, (SO, Tucson, Sahuaro HS) finished eighth in the shot put, with a distance of 47 feet, 11 1/4 inches, just ahead of teammate Lucas Volk, (FR, Tucson, Sabino HS), who was ninth (47-4 1/4).
