PCC students excel in math competition
Fourteen PCC mathematics students received Certificates of Merit for their high scores in a Student Math League competition sponsored by the American Mathematical Association of Two Year Colleges. The students are Dong Min Jang, Hari Subedi, Garrett Hawes, Daniel Eisenberg, Jason Osborn, William Loera, Matthew Branch, Holly Cornell, Mihwa Ahn, Christopher Haines, Tasfia Haque, Ken Michika, Erich Koch, and Kira Sund.
Pima’s top scorer, Dong Min Jang, ranked first in the Southwest Region and tied for 15th out of 2,122 competitors nationwide. Pima finished second in the Southwest Region, comprising Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and Oklahoma, and was 23rd out of 188 colleges in the U.S.
Student Math League competitors take two hour-long exams, consisting of 20 multiple-choice questions each. They are tested on College Algebra, Trigonometry, Statistics and Probability.
Campus moderators for the exam are Pat Townsend (DV), Ana Mantilla (DT), Sue Jensen (EC), Inoka Otero (NW) and Alice Adamson (WC). A total of 355 Pima students took at least one of the two exams during the 2008-09 academic year.
