Schantz is Conference Women's Tennis Coach of Year
Pima's Gretchen Schantz recently was named Women's Tennis coach of the year in the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference.
Her fellow ACCAC coaches chose her for the honor during the conference's end-of-year-meeting last month.
This week, the Aztecs finished in 18th place in Division I of the 2009 NJCAA National Tournament, which Pima hosted at Randolph Tennis Center. (Lee College of Baytown, Texas, won the tournament.) Advancing the furthest in the tourney for Pima were freshman Teri Flanagan (Carroll, Iowa), who lost her singles consolation semifinal and the doubles team of freshman Lori Cinnamond (North Miami Beach, Fla.) and sophomore Jenn Hamel, (Yuma, Ariz., Cibola HS) who lost in the consolation semifinals.
"Considering the competition at the tournament, I am very happy with this result," coach Shantz said. "Every player on the team contributed to the team total, which again highlights how deep this team was this season"
