Women's Tennis Team in Second Place in Region I Championships
The PCC women's tennis team is in second place overall in the 2009 Region I Championships after first-round play Wednesday. Three Aztec players advanced to Thursday's singles championship rounds. All three Aztec doubles teams advanced to Thursday's semifinals with either byes or wins Wednesday.
"We had a very strong first day of competition," head coach Gretchen Schantz said Wednesday. "We hope to continue with our success tomorrow and qualify for nationals."
Eastern Arizona College is in first place in the team competition. The top three teams after Thursday head to the 2009 NJCAA National Championship from May 2-7 in Tucson.
In singles for the Aztecs:
- No. 1-seed Ali Brackey plays in Thursday's championship for the No. 3 flight after a bye and a second-round victory;
- No. 1-seed Teri Flanagan plays in Thursday's championship for the No. 4 flight after a bye and a second-round victory;
- No. 2-seed Lori Cinnamond plays in Thursday's championship for the No. 5 flight after a bye and second-round victory;
In doubles for the Aztecs:
- The No. 1-seeded team of Brackey and Flanagan and the No. 2-seeded team of Jenn Hamel and Cinnamond advanced to Thurday's semifinals after byes on Wednesday.
- The team of Sands and Ponzio plays in Thursday's semifinals after winning its match Wednesday.
Not advancing were Eunice Sanchez and Cindy Sands, who each lost Wednesday in the second round of singles after first-round wins, while Kelly Ponzio lost her first-round singles match.
