Lachapelle, Zumwalde named ACCAC baseball players of week
Pima Community College’s Mike Lachapelle and Justin Zumwalde received ACCAC baseball player of the week honors for the week of April 15.
Lachapelle (Tucson Sahuaro HS), a sophomore, was named Arizona Community College Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week for the second consecutive week. April 18, he pitched a complete game shutout against Arizona Western College, 2-0. He struck out eight batters and walked one. April 14, he saved a 4-1 game against Mesa Community College.
Zumwalde, (Tucson, Sabino HS) a freshman, was named Batter of the Week by going 9 for 17, with three home runs, three doubles and 10 runs batted in through four games. He also scored six runs.
The Aztecs are 31-18-1 (20-14 in the ACCAC), and in fourth place in the conference, with a 2 1/2-game lead over Cochise College for the final spot in the 2009 NJCAA Region I playoffs.
The top-seeded team in the region, which is comprised of teams in Arizona, Colorado, Nebraska, Utah, Idaho and Nevada, will host the playoffs April 30-May 2 and May 7-9. Top finishers in the playoffs advance to the NJCAA National Championship from May 23-30 in Grand Junction, Colo.
